A green Pea Salad recipe perfect to serve at potlucks, gatherings or bbq's. It comes together quickly with only a few simple ingredients. The best creamy pea salad; great as a side with any meal or as a main course option. Gluten Free, Easy, Vegetarian Dairy free option.

pea salad in a grey bowl garnished with dill weed. A silver spoon beside the bowl and fresh dill weed in the background.

A classic pea salad that's creamy, delicious and comes together in under 15 minutes.

So that makes it perfect for a last minute side dish for a potluck, bbq or a healthy lunch.

I've been making this pea salad recipe for years, along with this easy broccoli salad for good reason!

Both are simple to make with ingredients I usually have on hand.

    Ingredients needed

green peas, red onion, cheese, mayo, bell pepper, vinegar, seasonings

    Ingredient notes

    • Green peas- You need to use frozen peas in this recipe. There isn't a substitute for this. Canned peas will not work for this salad.
    • Cheese- sharp cheddar cheese cubes. Can substitute with another cubed cheese, use shredded cheese or even dairy free cheese. I love this brand of dairy free cheese.
    • Red onion- it's milder than yellow or white onion and perfect for salads.
    • Bell pepper- yellow bell pepper was used here. You can substitute with red or orange, but green bell peppers are not recommended for this salad.
    • Dressing- mayo, sour cream, garlic powder, onion powder, dill weed, and red wine vinegar. You can substitute red wine vinegar with apple cider vinegar.

Dairy free option- omit the sour cream and use all mayo or use a dairy free sour cream.

    How to make pea salad

    1. Add peas, chopped bell pepper and onion to mixing bowl and set aside.
    2. Next add mayo, sour cream, seasonings and vinegar to small mixing bowl.
    3. Whisk together till combined.
    4. Pour over veggies and mix.
    5. Add cheese and gently combine. Enjoy!

How long can you store this salad

This green pea salad can be stored in a sealed airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days.

    What to serve with it

    • Mustard potato salad
    • Honey mustard coleslaw
    • Almond flour biscuits
    • Cauliflower potato salad

Love this recipe as is πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘. Very refreshing and tasty with the dill and red wine vinegar. It’s truly easy too. Thank you! The next time I make this recipe I’m going to try substituting with vegan mayo, sour cream & cheese for those vegans that I share lunch with each week.

I don't have red wine vinegar, can I use white wine vinegar instead?

Loved this recipe. My youngest is the only pea eater in the house, but trying them this way made more pea eaters! Yay! Made as recipe states except added chopped boiled egg per my moms request. Loved!

Aren't peas one of the best ingredients of spring? From watching the pea shoots climb their way up the frame and net, to seeing the flower and pods grow, to finally picking and podding them! This pea salad looks like a lovely way to make the best of peas and I think I'm going to give it a go with fresh, in lieu of the frozen, I'm sure it'll work nicely! Thanks!
