    ❓Frequently asked questions

Can I use a different sweetener?

I've only tested the recipe using maple syrup but other people have had success using other sweeteners such as honey and coconut sugar. Please refer to their comments below for more details.

Can I adjust the amount of sweetener if I like sweeter cookies?

Yes, personally we don't like overly sweet baked goods so I tend to go lighter on sweeteners but feel free to adjust this based on your preferences.

These have a nice chocolate taste but they need a sweetener. Next time I would definitely use stevia or something- maybe a little more sugar free syrup. But the chocolate flavor is nice.

You could add a little extra maple syrup if prefer a sweeter cookie!

I think everyone's coconut flour is different because it seems some peoples worked and some were very wet. I do know it is a very absorbent flour, mine was almost liquid (but do note i used substitutes: sugar for maple syrup, butter for coconut oil) so i added another heaped tablespoon of coconut flour and cocoa. I also topped it with some desiccated coconut and sugar and they came out lovely once the mixture was actually able to me moulded. Thank you, my first time using coconut flour!!

Hi Nylie, I haven't personally tested the recipe with honey so I can't tell you for sure what the results might be. Honey isn't as sweet as maple syrup but you could certainly try. Let me know if you try it and how they turn out for you.

I didn’t have chocolate chips, so I used 1/3 cup Cacao, 1/3 cup paleo flour, 1/3 cup coconut oil and 1/3 cup maple syrup. The dough was pretty liquid, but the cookies were nicenn

I used Aguave Nectar and sugar-free chocolate chips bc that’s all I had. It’s thinner than honey, so I added another few tsps of flour. Added a few walnuts in place of @2tsp. Of the choc. Chips. Turned out well.
I guess you can tell improvised bc someone sent me the recipe at 10pm. My daughter went strictly by the recipe and thought they were a little too cake-like. Would more oil fix that?

What can I substitute for the coconut oil besides butter? Could I use canned pumpkin or applesauce?

        • Stephanie

          June 04, 2022 at 5:15 pm

I've only tested the recipe using unrefined coconut oil. I can't say for sure what the results would be using pumpkin or applesauce other than it would alter the flavor some. I'd recommend trying a vegan butter or another neutral flavored oil such as olive oil.

I feel it is very hard to do the shaping for the cookies, the batter is way too soft and stick all over my fingers.
how could you do it in such a nice round shape?

Hi Clara, I like to use a cookie scoop to get equal portions. You can lightly dampen the cookie scoop or your hands if you find the batter is too sticky! Also you can try using a fork to press down on the top of the cookies. Hope this helps! πŸ˜‰

I tried a banana (a whole banana because 1/2 banana = 1 egg). Very tasty (on the sweet side) and the texture isn’t bad at all! I’ll try flax another time.

Not too intense and I can give them to my kids without them getting overloaded on sugar. The cookies turned out cakey and they remind me of a brownie but healthier. Thank you for the recipe!

I have made these twice following the recipe exactly, and both times the dough was the consistency of brownie batter. I added a few spoonfuls of coconut flour to thicken it and then used a spoon to portion them. They taste great nonetheless! I have been using King Arthur's coconut flour, maybe another brand would make more of a dough. I also wonder if you pack the coconut flour when you measure it? Thanks!

Hi Rosie, the consistency of the cookies should not be runny at all and you should be able to easily scoop the cookies onto a baking sheet. I haven't worked with King Arthur's coconut flour so I can't speak on that. But I've linked in the recipe card to the coconut flour that I always use and love. Also make sure that you're combining everything really well.. And Yes I do always pack my coconut flour. Hope this helps and glad you're Enjoying the cookies!😍

So far so good I added sugar substitute and 1/4 cup of water instead of maple syrup and a tsp of vanilla to this recipe. I only used 1/4 cup of chocolate chips as well since I am trying to stay low carb. It turned out pretty good coconut flour always has that kind dry taste but all in all for 5 net carbs per cookie it was a nice little treat <3 waiting for the rest to cool so I can try one while not burning my tongue haha

Hi Nida, if you followed the recipe exactly it should not have been liquidy at all. Did you melt the coconut oil first? You could always add just a little bit more coconut flour being careful to only add a little at a time since coconut flour absorbs liquid very quickly.
